Our August Sponsorship presentation was to four organisations and took place at our offices on Skehard road on the 26/08/2016.
St. Michael’s Lawn Tennis Club
St. Michael’s Lawn Tennis Club is set in the heart of Blackrock. Established in the 1920’s the tennis club boasts one of the proudest heritages in Cork. The tennis club’s facilities include a club house, 5 all-weather floodlit courts and a practice wall, amongst other amenities. In the club's recent past they have produced 8 juniors, who have achieved top 10 rankings in Ireland, a fantastic achievement. This talent has been nurtured by their junior coaching programme that caters for all ages and abilities.
St. Michael’s Lawn Tennis Club organise events throughout the year. The club is hosting their Senior Open tennis tournament in mid-September. This weeklong event will involve 200 participants across 18 different categories. We've previously been involved with fundraising efforts and are delighted to be involved once again.
Patsy Deasy Memorial Fund
The Patsy Deasy Memorial Fund recently held their the Annual Patsy Deasy Memorial Golf Classic at Mahon Golf Club. St. Michael's proudly sponsored one of the tee boxes at the golf classic.
The focus this year was to raise funds for the Alzheimer Day Care Unit in Bessboro, Blackrock. The Day Care Unit provides dementia specific, person-centred care to meet the needs of people in a warm, welcoming and safe environment. While also providing support and stimulation to people. They work with each person to ensure they feel comfortable, supported and their individual needs are met as far as possible. A wide range of activities are offered including; reminiscence therapy, music sessions, gentle exercises, arts and crafts and personal care. A hot lunch is also provided for everyone that is attending the day centre.
The Alzheimer Society of Ireland is the country's leading dementia specific service provider. Based in the heart of local communities, they provide specific services, supports and advocate for the rights and needs of people living with dementia and their carers. Their vision is an Ireland where no one goes through dementia alone and where their needs are appropriately met.
Moving Mountains Trust
The Moving Mountains Trust, is an Irish and UK based charity that works with international NGO’s in Kenya, Nepal and with a community cooperative in Borneo. The organisation focuses on long-term sustainability by putting emphasis on supporting people in ways that assist them at present but also in the long term. Moving Mountains projects are based on professionalism, community ownership and sustainability.
Mairead McWhinney will be travelling to Embu Kenya in September as part of a team of volunteers with the Moving Mountains Trust. The volunteering team includes Dr Orla Batt a GP based in Ballinlough, Dr Siobhan Hanrahan and members of Blackrock Hillwalking Club. Both Orla and Siobhan have previously been to Embu. Embu is situated on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya. The team will be working with community development projects there. The group will be working with the local community on a renovation/development project, while also working with the Rescue Centre for Street Children. All donations that are made go directly towards Moving Mountain’s work in Kenya.
In addition to fundraising for the projects, the group are also collecting pre-owned football boots and other football gear to support the Black Cats sports development programme.
Rockies Bowls Club
The Rockies Bowls Club was established in 1992. Currently, it has 40 full-time members and 9 social members. With 98% of the club’ membership being pensioners, the club provides a great opportunity for senior members of the community to be active.
St. Michael’s Credit Union has been proudly involved with the Rockies Bowls Club over the years. Providing sponsorship for the club’s Annual Bowling Tournament. This year’s tournament is taking place from the 3rd to the 5th of October. We're delighted to be involved with this event once again.
